Bagels 'n Box incorporates the modern, hip beatboxing talent of
J. Stone with the classic Jewish cantorial vocals of Jon Murstein.
Bagels 'n Box is the story of two childhood friends united by their passion for revolutionizing Jewish music. They were amongst friends several years ago when one suggested: "Jon, you know almost every Jewish prayer there is. J., you can beatbox to anything. Have you guys ever tried to...collaborate?" And just like that, Bagels 'n Box was born. Bagels 'n Box presents an enlivening fusion of centuries-old prayer and cutting-edge vocal percussion, preserving the traditional sounds of Judaism within an exciting, hip-hop context.
Jon Murstein began singing Jewish music as a member of his synagogue's choir at the age of 8. After being drawn to the beauty of the Jewish services and paying considerable attention to renowned Cantor Yehuda Shifman lead them over several years, Jon formally trained with Cantor Shifman's nephew Aaron, currently at B'nai Jeshurun in Ohio. In 1997, Jon was hired by his synagogue to serve as cantor for the High Holy Days, leading the Family Service for 350 congregants and making him one of the youngest professional cantors in the country at the age of 14. Jon's extensive background in Jewish music has afforded him a broad knowledge of both religious and cultural songs alike, though prayer music is his specialty. Jon earned a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University and lives in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.
